Born in 1270 at Parbhani district in Maharashtra, Namadev, a saint poet belonged to the Varkari Sampradhaya pioneered by Jnaneshwar. Namadev is considered to be the first singer to compose abhangs in Marathi. He has the credit of composing about 2500 abhangs and some of his songs are found in the Granth Saheb of the Sikhs. He is said to have traveled widely in North India, to spread the bhakthi cult. Alongwith Dnyandev, he is said to have gone on pilgrimage to Dwaraka, Hastinapur, Banaras, Mathura and Ayodhya among several other places. There are several instances, where Lord Krishna is supposed to have blessed Namadev during difficult situations. On such incident happened at Kolayat near Bikaner, when the water from a deep well rose to the brim to quench the thirst of the saint poet who was fatigued after a long journey. This event is recalled by the pilgrims who assemble at 'Namdev's Well', at Kolayat in December. Namdev attained samadhi in July 1350 at the temple of Vithoba in Pandharpur.
